There are many myths about solar thermal systems being designed to heat hot water and some information can over complicate and confuse, but it is really quite simple.

Solar energy is simply harnessing the power of the sun’s rays,( sunlight, daylight) and using this energy to heat hot water in a suitable hot water cylinder.

Solar power is free, clean energy that can lower our carbon footprint and save on energy costs, particularly hot water costs. With growing families or just multiple bathroom properties are demand for hot water is often constant. Solar thermal can save 60% of your hot water costs and higher during the summer months and it’s free.

We have enough sunlight – daylight in the UK to make solar thermal a viable renewable energy and well worth the investment, and with the Government committed to renewable energy there is now a Renewable Heat Incentive that applies to solar thermal working on a feed tariff system where panels will earn payments for units of energy created.

    Solar Gain – The Smart Way To Save Energy

    The Rays omitted from the sun contain energy that can be collected via solar collectors or panels.

    There are generally two types of panel, evacuated tubes or flat plate collectors. These collectors heat a water-based liquid within the panels/system called glycol, with a pump station that circulates the glycol through a coil within a suitable solar compatible cylinder transferring the heat generated to indirectly heat your hot water.

    The panels must be positioned ideally on a south roof – south-east/west facing roof or ground space to get the best percentage of sunlight/daylight and efficiency and the cylinder must be size correctly to maximise the solar gain allowing for other energy sources either gas/oil or renewable energy.

    A solar thermal system would generally consist of Solar collectors sized to the roof space and required demand. A Solar station- controller and pump which is at the core of the system and brains of the system, managing the system on day to day basis. A self-contained unit normally installed within the loft area but can be separately installed in different locations. A hot water collector or cylinder sized to each application, number of panels and occupants and solar gain created by the solar collectors. The cylinder would generally have two coils lower and upper and two or three temperature sensors, mentoring the level of solar gain and bringing into play a backup /boiler heat source if required. The system would also consist of a surge protector, air separator, and expansion vessel to take up expansion of the system fluid.
